October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and NCMC Student Senate is promoting DVAM by providing several resources to assist those experiencing domestic violence, honor the lives that have been lost and support all survivors of domestic violence.
Several buildings and offices around campus are featuring a purple “escape” button sticker. When an individual sees an escape button, that location is a designated safe zone for survivors seeking assistance without the fear of being monitored. Areas identified by escape buttons also have educational materials in hand to help survivors connect with support avenues.
NCMC Student Senate is also participating in the #1Thing campaign. The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence developed #1Thing campaign to remind everyone change can start with only #1Thing (nrcdv.org/dvam/1thing). By placing cards in the NCMC Library, Student Senate encourages individuals to share 1 thing they are doing that will bring awareness, promote action, or end domestic violence. Student Senate’s #1Thing is to “work with NCMC faculty and staff to promote the shared use of technology for those in domestic violence situations that are seeking help.”
As a third activity, the student senate encourages everyone to wear purple on Domestic Violence Awareness Day on Thursday, Oct. 25 to promote and raise awareness for domestic violence.
