With Richmond coming to the Riverside Country Club on Thursday for Trenton’s senior night triangular – which also included Maysville – it was going to be tough for the Bulldogs to walk off the course with a win.
Senior Werthen Gass wasn’t about to concede medalist honors on her final trek around the local nine-hole course, however,
Gass carded a 44 at the triangular, tying Richmond’s Ava Wirsig for the lowest total and then won the medal on a scorecard playoff.
“I was very happy for Werthen to be able to earn co-medalist honors in the last match of her career,” Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said. “It was especially nice that it came on her home course and on senior night. Ava Wirsig is a very good golfer and won the Missouri River Valley Conference Tournament. So for Werthen to tie her score of 44 and win with a scorecard playoff is a great way to finish the regular season.”
Gass had three pars in her final dual at the RCC.
As a team, the Bulldogs carded a team score of 221, one stroke shy of Maysville’s 220 and 21 behind Richmond’s triangular-winning total of 200. Maci Henson followed Gass with a 53, parring one hole and Oakley Madden had two pars on the way to a score of 56.
“Maci and Oakley are playing better, but just need to find some consistency and learn to save a stroke when they can out there,” Mullenix said. “It’s a grind and you have to stay focused throughout the entire round and on every shot. It can be an emotional roller coaster out there and they have shown they can put together really good rounds, but they need to find that consistency.”
Rounding out the team score for Trenton was Mari Atup’s 68. Ann Airey was in varsity action, shooting a 69 and Josie Chumbley carded a 68 in a junior varsity round.
“I’m very proud of my three newcomers to the program,” Mullenix said. “Ann, Josie and Mari have been great additions to the team and I look forward to working with them the next few years. They have made great strides this year and I really think they have the potential to be real good golfers.”
The event was the final regular-season event for Trenton, which finished the season with a 2-5 dual record. The Bulldogs will travel to the Green Hills Golf Course in Chillicothe for the Class 1, District 6 Tournament on Monday. Tee time for that event is scheduled for 9 a.m.
