Girls Tennis Team Gets Double Win at St. Joseph

Sep 19, 2018 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

Had the Trenton High School tennis team gone to St. Joseph and returned home with one victory on Tuesday it would have been great. Returning home with two victories, though, that was even better.
Because of a scheduling conflict on the part of the Benton Cardinals, who were scheduled to dual the Bulldogs on Monday, Trenton played its regularly scheduled dual with Lafayette on Tuesday and followed it up with a dual against the Cardinals. Trenton defeated both St. Joseph schools, scoring an 8-1 win over Lafayette and a 6-3 win over Benton.
The two wins saw Trenton move to 5-4 overall.
vs. LAFAYETTE
Trenton opened with Lafayette. Emma Gilham and Lexi Gott combined for an 8-1 win to kick off the dual with doubles play. That would be Gilham’s lone match of the dual as the Trenton number-one player was dealing with a sore ankle. Elle Neal and Latorrie Johnson scored an 8-3 win and Kendall Crowley and Morgan Dolan added an 8-0 win to give Trenton a sweep of doubles play.
Gilham’s absence wouldn’t hurt Trenton too much in singles play. Neal stepped into the top spot and suffered an 8-4 loss, but Trenton would sweep the remaining matches. Crowley won 8-2 at number two, Johnson won 8-1 at three, Gott won 8-1 at four, Dolan won 8-2 at five and Mallory Sole won 8-1 at number six.
vs. BENTON
Gilham and Gott suffered a close 8-6 loss in doubles play against Benton, but Neal and Johnson won 8-3 and Crowley and Dolan won 8-1.
Gilham fell 8-2 in singles play, but her teammates picked her up by taking four of the remaining five singles matches to give Trenton its second win of the day. Neal won 8-0 at number two and Crowley secured an 8-2 victory at number three. After Johnson lost 8-3 at number four, Gott picked up an 8-3 win at number five and Dolan won 8-0 at six.
Trenton dueled Chillicothe on Thursday at the THS tennis courts. A game story from that dual can be found online at www.republican-times.com. Trenton travels to the Benton Tournament on Friday.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Trenton swept JV action against Lafayette, winning all four matches. Emilee Lovell and Amanda Parrack won 4-2, Bailea Jeannoutot and Alaina Overton won 4-0, Baley Catron and Trinity Gaunt won 4-1 and Harley Hall and Kaylor Farris won 4-0.
Against Benton, Trenton won eight-of-10 JV matches. In singles, Gaunt won 4-3, Parrack lost 4-0, Leslie Cotiangco lost 4-0, Catron won 4-0 and Overton won 5-3. In doubles play, Lovell and Cotiangco won 4-1, Parrack and Jeannoutot won 4-1, Overton and Catron won 4-0, Hall and Farris won 4-1 and Sole and Catron won 4-0.
