The Trenton Middle School football team came up on the short end Monday night, falling 14-13 to the visiting Putnam County Midgets at C.F. Russell Stadium.
Trenton scored first, going up 7-0 on a 25-yard touchdown run by Sam Gibson and point-after kick by Hunter McAtee. By halftime, however, Trenton was looking at a one-point deficit after the Midgets followed up a second-quarter score with a successful two-point conversion attempt.
Trenton was forced to go for two following their second touchdown, which came in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs failed. When Putnam County answered the touchdown, Trenton kept the Midgets out on the impending two-point try, but it was too late as the visitors took the game by the single point.
Gibson finished with 117 yards rushing and scored both Bulldog touchdowns to lead the offense. Defensively, Dylan Spencer and Coleman Griffin had seven and five tackles respectively to lead Trenton.
“I’m proud of how hard our boys worked this week,” Trenton Head Coach Jon Guthrie said. “Defensively, we played a good game. Coach (TJ) Ireland had a great scheme set up and, if we stop them on a couple of big plays, PC would have had less than 100 yards of offense.
“Overall, the boys played a tough game and I’m proud of their effort.”
The middle school football team, now 1-2 overall, will travel to Princeton on Monday for its next game. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
