Billy Keith “Bill” Whitten, a 75-year-old Gilman City resident, died on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Gilman City, under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home at Bethany. Burial with military rites will follow in the Masonic Cemetery at Gilman City.
A family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018 at the church.
Mr. Whitten was born on May 2, 1943 in Trenton, the son of Aaron Arthur and Willa Marguerite Tourney Whitten. He grew up in Gilman City and Trenton and enlisted in the United States Army on July 21, 1963. After serving his country, he returned home and married his wife, Barbara, on Dec. 16, 1966 in Kansas City.
He moved to Gilman City in 1970 and was a barber for 50 years. He also had several other jobs over the years at Justrite Dairy, Modine Manufacturing, Home Exchange Bank of Jamesport and Gilman City, American Family Insurance, Cameron Corrections and W.W. Grainger. He was also owner of the Gilman City grocery store.
He became a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Gilman City in 1986.
He enjoyed playing the guitar and was a songwriter.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Joy Whitten of the home; one son, Brian Keith (Michelle) Whitten of St. Peters; three daughters, Julie (Charlie) Ramsbottom of Maysville, Jeanna (Jeff) Bridgman of St. Joseph and Jill (Brian) Ward of Pattonsburg; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale “Bud” (Beverly) Whitten of Holt; a sister, Barbara Kirk of Independence; a brother-in-law, Tom Kirk; three half-sisters, Linda (Jim) Jason of Lacon, IL, Cheryl McIntire of Independence and Rebecca Lorance of Jacksonville, AR; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Robert V. White; a sister, Bonita Siercks; a half-brother, Donald White; and a half-sister, Lucinda White.
