The Grundy County Emergency Management Association is encouraging local residents to take extra care while burning outdoors during the current weather situation.
“Prolonged dry conditions are leading to an increased threat for natural cover fires,” Grundy County EMA Director Glen Briggs said. “The severe drought that a large portion of the area is now experiencing has led to many natural grasses going dormant, which leads to increased risk for fires.”
Anyone who is conducting outdoor burning is strongly urged to use extreme care by having a readily available supply of water and by not leaving fires unattended. Briggs said that those working with outdoor equipment should also use care and take steps to reduce sparks that may ignite dry and dormant grasses.
Persons with questions may contact Briggs at 359-4040, ext. 2250.
