Trenton State Tennis Update

May 25, 2018 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton combined for a 7-6, 7-6 victory in the first round of the state individual doubles bracket Friday morning at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. It took tiebreakers in each set, but the Trenton duo came out on top each time, delivering a win over a Dexter duo to place the Bulldog combo in the state quarterfinals.
While Trenton enjoyed doubles success, however, both of Trenton’s singles entries were handed first-round losses. Nick Shields was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Rory Sutter of John Burroughs and Gabe Swann fell 6-1, 6-0 to Evan Erb of MICDS.
Ockenfels and Houghton will be in quarterfinal action later today, taking on William Van Hoornbeek and Chris Holt of Bolivar. Swann and Shields will both be in singles consolation action today. Shields will face Garrett Kincaid of Pembroke Hill while Swann squares off with Warren Chinwuko of Sikeston. The tournament is a double-elimination tournament.
