With the 2017-18 school year quickly coming to a close, Trenton Bright Futures is organizing a one-day community Back to School event for the 2018-19 school year that will include several events involving a number of school and local organizations as well as the business community.
The Trenton R-9 Back to School event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 9 and will be for students at all grade levels in the R-9 District. Bright Futures Coordinator Terri Critten said the day will include student enrollment, health screenings and a back to school cookout and pool party along with other activities to get families ready for the start of school.
The open enrollment will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the high school and parents will be able to enroll their child at that time, no matter which building they will be having classes in next year (Rissler, middle school or high school). Computers will be used to complete online enrollment and parents will also be able to complete free/reduced lunch applications, make bus arrangements, pay fees for iPad use and take care of other school-related business.
From 4 to 7 p.m. on that day, the Grundy County Health Department will be providing health screenings at no charge, including vision, dental and scoliosis. Height and weight measurements will be taken and information will be provided on a variety of safety topics. School supplies for students in need will also be distributed.
Students who participate in the health screenings, along with their families, will be eligible to participate in a cookout and pool party that evening at the Trenton Family Aquatic Center.
Local churches will be joining the efforts to provide gently used clothing and shoes to families in need and back to school haircuts will also be offered.
The Bright Futures Committee is inviting other community organizations, businesses or individuals to assist with this effort if they would like to do so. Resource and financial donations are also welcomed and volunteers will be needed to help on Aug. 9 to help make the event a success.
For more information or to volunteer to help with the event, persons are asked to contact Mrs. Critten by email, [email protected]. Persons can also follow Bright Futures Trenton on Facebook and are also encouraged to watch Community Connections for text messages.
Members of the Bright Futures Steering committee, in addition to Mrs Critten, are Chris Hoffman, Dan Wiebers, Elizabeth Gibson, Sarah Jackson, Lynn Griffin, Tim Michael and Abby Oberman.
