Area School Boards Address Meal Prices, Personnel

Meal prices, a new scoreboard and personnel were among items addressed by meetings of the Princeton R-5, Pleasant View R-6 and Newtown-Harris boards of education.
Princeton R-5
Meal prices were increased and a summer school option was approved during a meeting of the Princeton R-5 Board of Education on Monday night.
According to information provided by Board Secretary Christy Stockman, student meal prices will be going up 10 cents for the 2018-19 school year. Prices will be $2.35, K-6 lunch; $2.60, 7-12 lunch; $3.40, adult lunch; $1.50, K-12 breakfast; and $2, adult breakfast.
The board approved a cooperating summer school program with the Trenton R-9 School District, which would allow Princeton students to attend the “Summer Journey” program being offered May 23 to June 23 in Trenton. Trenton will be providing a bus to transport Princeton students to and from Trenton, with the bus leaving the Princeton campus at 7 a.m. and returning at 3:45 p.m. Students entering grades kindergarten through eight will be encouraged to enroll in the program, which will offer gift cards and other prizes to students with perfect or near perfect attendance.
The Princeton School District will be adding an early childhood special education program next year, which will serve students starting at age three who qualify for the program services. The district will be employing a paraprofessional to assist with the new program.
The board voted to refund senior class dues after class members voted to forgo a senior trip and requested the dues be returned to the students. The remaining balance will be placed in a class alumni account for reunion gatherings.
Approval was given to the purchase of fitness equipment for the new addition at the Stacy Multipurpose Center. The equipment will include new free weights, treadmills, recumbent bikes, seated rowing machines, ellipticals and a cable crossover machine. A bid from ProMaxima for $34,721.01 was approved and was the lowest of two bids received. The school district has received donations and pledges to cover the cost for the equipment. It was noted the new facility will be utilized by the school district and also be available to Stacy members outside of school hours.
There was a discussion regarding custodial staffing. The district has one position open and will likely be adding another position before the start of school. The board will review more information at the June meeting.
The board reviewed and approved several MSBA board policies.
It was announced the last day of school will be on May 22 and that summer hours at the central office will begin on June 4.
Following an executive session, the board accepted resignations from Wade Hall and Alex Loyd, junior/senior high school history teachers, and Lindsay Landis, junior/senior high science teacher. The board employed Cody Scroggie as a junior/senior high teacher, Jeanenne Zeider as an elementary paraprofessional and approved an extra duty assignment for Lori Puls to serve as elementary student council sponsor. Holly Glenn was hired as the food cashier.
The next meeting of the board will be on Monday, June 11.
Pleasant View R-6
Information was presented regarding the purchase of a new scoreboard during a meeting of the Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education on Friday night.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rebecca Steinhoff, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Trenton has presented a proposal for a new scoreboard, with the cost to the district being $4,500. Coca-Cola would contribute $2,000 toward the purchase with the school ageeing to use Coca-Cola products exclusively for eight years.
Student and staff handbooks for the 2018-19 school year were approved as was a lease renewal for copy machines from ProServe in St. Joseph. A contract from Terwilleger Therapy Team of Kearney for physical and occupational therapy services for next year was also approved.
Mrs. Steinhoff gave an update of future dates of importance, including the ECSE summer school, which will be held May 21 to June. 7. The board gave a second reading to several MSBA policy updates.
During an executive session, the board approved the resignation of Cassie Cordray as well as extra duty contracts for staff. It was decided to increase substitute pay to $75 per day for the 2018-19 school year as well as implement a long-term (four consecutive weeks) substitute policy.
The next meeting of the board will be on Tuesday, June 12
Newtown-Harris
Three individuals were hired by the Newtown-Harris Board of Education during its meeting on Monday night.
According to information provided by Superintendent Dr. Kim Johnson, Rachael Spence was hired as the K-12 counselor of the 2018-19 school year while Josie Hinkle was approved as the K-6 special education teacher. She currently serves as a special education paraprofessional at the school. Also hired was Kelly Lee, who will be the science instructor for grades seven through 12.
The board approved the purchase of a lawnmower for the district, with bids to be procured from area businesses. The propane bid from MFA was approved at a contrated rate of $1.219 per gallon. The average yearly gallon usage is 26,000.
The board approved graduating seniors Katie Blanchard and Jessica Tovrea to receive A-Plus designation and also approved the addition of board president Jeanie Faulkner to the district bank account and the removal of past president Sharmyn Garcia. Amanda Neff, the district bookkeeper, will remain on the account as an authorized signer. Guidelines for the 2018 summer credit recovery program were approved.
The school district will be conducting a security audit to determine a door security system. Once a determination is made, bids will be sought for the purchase and installation of the system.
The board heard reports involving ag classes, FFA activities and the K-12 art program. The principal’s report included recent student testing information as well as Teacher Appreciation Week activities. Dr. Johnson discussed trainings and meetings she has been attending as well as district activities, including graduation and the National Honor Society induction. She also shared preliminary budget information for the 2018-19 school year.
The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Monday, June 11.
