The Grundy County Museum continues preparations for the Smithsonian Hometown Teams traveling exhibit scheduled to open May 26.
Don Dalrymple and Tom Stickler, museum board members, recently attended a two-day workshop to learn how to assemble the exhibit that will arrive in 17 crates. The largest weighs 270 pounds.
The theme of the exhibit is the role of sports in the American culture, especially in small towns, where everyone benefits from participation in sports teams….the athletes, fans, cheerleaders, bands, referees, coaches, communities and the sponsoring schools and organizations.
The Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit presents the sports experience from a national perspective through pylons with pictures plus audio and video presentations. The museum will present a companion exhibit that celebrates the experiences of Grundy County’s athletes through information panels, video interviews, photographs, stories and personal presentations.
The exhibit is made possible by the Smithsonian Museum and the Missouri Humanities Council. Co-chairmen of the local exhibit component are Tad Trombley and Phil Schlarb.
