Last year, the Trenton High School girls track and field team was knocked off by Worth County at the Grand River Conference meet. The school went ahead and hung a banner on the wall in the gym.
Grand River Conference East champions, it reads.
Despite the second-place finish, Trenton was the top finishing team in the east division.
The girls will hang another banner this year, but this one won’t need the ‘east’ distinction.
Trenton bested all 15 other Grand River Conference schools at the annual conference meet, held at St. Joseph Christian High School on Monday. Trenton tallied 135 points to out-duel Worth County, which was the runner-up with 120.5 points.
Trenton won just three events, but threw numbers at the meet and double placed in nine events to power its way to the top of the standings.
Sprinting and throwing were Trenton’s strongest areas. Kristi Ewing and Lexi Whitaker went head-to-head in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and both placed in all three events. Ewing grabbed gold in the 200-meter dash, winning with a time of 27.72. She was also second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.48 and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.76.

The 4×400-meter relay team of Gott, McKayla Blackburn, Hurley and Gwyneth Foster was second with a time of 4:32.42 and the 4×100-meter relay team of Gott, Emma Curtis, Foster and Evy McCullough was third with a time of 55.7.

Trenton’s main competition at the meet came from across division lines as Stanberry (88.5), St. Joseph Christian (78) and Braymer (73) followed Worth County to round out the top five. The highest finishing GRC East school outside of Trenton was Putnam County, which was sixth with 63 points.
BOYS
The Trenton boys also won three events at the GRC meet, but didn’t have the numbers to throw several other placewinners behind the three-gold medal performances. The Bulldogs scored 77 points, placing fifth in the 16-team field.
Jadan Whitney accounted for two of Trenton’s gold medals, winning the discus with a throw of 147-0 and the shot put with a throw of 48-1. Carson Burchett was runner-up to Whitney in the shot put with a throw of 45-10.
Brian Ewing had Trenton’s lone gold medal on the track, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.71. Ewing was also second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.83 and second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.46. He also placed seventh in the long jump with a jump of 18-7.
