Entering the final home dual of the season for the Trenton High School tennis team, the Bulldogs and visiting Kirksville Tigers had split duals on the season. Trenton had defeated the Tigers at the Kirksville Tournament, but the Tigers had avenged that loss when Trenton traveled to Kirksville for a traditional dual.
To watch the teams play on Monday in Trenton, however, you would be hard pressed to believe Kirksville had ever got the better of the Bulldogs.
Maybe it was the Senior Day atmosphere and the adrenaline of the final home dual of the year for the Trenton team. Maybe the windy conditions weren’t as big of an issue for the Bulldogs. Whatever the case, Trenton made Kirksville look like just another also-ran, defeating the Tigers 8-1 in a dominating effort.
“It was definitely a windy day for tennis, but that wasn’t going to stop the team from getting a W for our seniors,” Trenton Coach Dave Sager said.
Trenton opened the dual with a sweep of doubles play, burying the Tigers early. Nick Shields and Gabe Swann scored an 8-1 win, Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton won 8-1 as well and Wyatt Neal and Jeremy Elliott won 8-2.
When the action turned to singles play, Trenton continued to pull away. Shields, Ockenfels and Swann won the first three matches 8-1 to seal the dual victory. Houghton lost 8-3 at number four, but Trenton closed the contest on a high note as Neal won 8-5 at number five and Elliott won 8-2 at number six.
“Our three seniors on the team (Ockenfels, Neal and Colten Hamilton) have been a part of our program for three-to-four years and I thank them for their commitment to Trenton tennis as well as representing our school and community in the right way.”
With the dual win, Trenton moved to 8-1 in dual play and 10-2 overall.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Trenton was 0-5 in junior varsity matches on the day. Elijah Merrin lost the only JV singles match 6-0. In JV doubles play, Isaac Harris and Weston Otto lost 7-5, Hamilton and Reece Miller fell 6-3, Riley Raymo and Cole Soptic were defeated 6-0 and Sabastian Brown and Kasen Christy lost 6-1.
UP NEXT
