Phil Schlarb presented information about an upcoming exhibit at the Grundy County Museum during Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Joe Brinser was the program chairman.
Schlarb told about the Smithsonian’s “Hometown Teams” traveling exhibit that will be coming to Trenton in May and will feature information about sports in America and its effect on everyday life. The paneled exhibit will be on display beginning May 26 and will be available for viewing until July 6.
To accompany the national exhibit, the local museum board is putting together a 24-panel display that features local sports of all types, focusing on Grundy County. Included in the exhibit will be a photograph of the first-ever American Legion baseball team in 1927 as well as photos of various sports that have taken place over the year. There will also be videotaped interviews with several sports individuals with Trenton ties as well as information compiled from live and telephone interviews. Jesse Owens’ visit and Yogi Berra playing baseball in Trenton will be among the highlights included in the local exhibit.
During the business meeting, members discussed reviving the “Trenton’s Got Talent” program next year.
Next week’s program chairman is Melissa King with the program being presented by Ben Thomas of Thomas Family Farms.
