Laredo Board OKs Salary Hike

Action regarding personnel took up most of the agenda for Monday’s meeting of the Laredo R-7 Board of Education.
According to information provided by Board Secretary Mona Loyd, the board voted to increase the base salary for certified staff by $500 for the 2018-19 school year, setting the base pay for a beginning teacher at $28,400. The board also approved continuing payment of 40 percent of the cost of Career Ladder even though the state does not pay any reimbursement.
All non-certified staff and bus drivers received a 2.5 percent salary increase for the 2018-19 school year. Non-certified staff rehired for next year were Susan Cooksey, Keri Foster, David Davis, Charlie Bowe, Larry Loyd, Alex Marsh and Cassidy Bethards. Extra duty contracts were also approved and include Michelle Lynch, fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth grade basketball coach; and Tammy Meeker, seventh/eighth grade sponsor.
The board voted to accept the resignation of Mrs. Loyd as the secretary/bookkeeper, effective June 30. Applications to fill the position will be accepted in the school office until 1 p.m. on Friday, April 20.
A contract was approved for Alicia Rojas to serve as the district speech-language pathologist for the 2018-19 school year at a cost of $56 per hour for up to 10 hours per week. A contract with Melissa Peery to serve as occupational therapist for next year at a rate of $70 per hour for two to four hours per week was approved. She will also be reimbursed for her mileage. Amy Montgomery was contracted to serve as the school guidance counselor for the 2018-19 school year at a rate of $38.95 per hour for one day a week from Sept. 4 to April 30, 2019.
Payment of MSBA dues for next year was approved as was the NEE contract. No action was taken regarding employee health insurance. There was also a second reading of MSBA policy updates as well as discussion of instruments for the music department and a review of technology updates.
The oath of office for a three-year term was given to board members Brad Wilford and Matt Foster. Wilford was elected board president. Other officers include Foster, vice president; Jason Meeker, treasurer; Mrs. Loyd, secretary; and Phil Fox, MSBA delegate.
The next meeting of the board is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, May 14 at the school.
