A record turnout for the Trenton High School girls track and field team is producing good results. The Bulldogs won for the second time this season, defending their home track at C.F. Russell Stadium again with a victory at the Trenton Relays. Trenton tallied 130 points, easily topping runner-up Higginsville (106.5).
Trenton won five events at the meet, three of which were relays. Trenton’s 4×200-meter relay team of Kristi Ewing, Mykah Hurley, Lexi Whitaker and Gwyneth Foster combined to win gold with a time of 1:50.82. For Whitaker, it was her ninth-straight first-place finish to open the season. Her streak would stop there, however, as her teammate, Ewing, edged her in the 400-meter dash. Ewing crossed the line first with a time of 59.66, while Whitaker was runner-up with a time of 1:01.34.
Ewing also combined with Foster, Lexi Gott and McKayla Blackburn to win the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:25.06 and the 4×800-meter relay team of Hannah Mehrhoff, Foster, Karli Provorse and Blackburn took gold as well, winning with a time of 11:28.22.
Hurley captured Trenton’s other individual gold at the meet, winning the long jump with a mark of 15-0.25.
Backing up Trenton’s five gold medals were four runner-up finishes, including Whitaker’s in the 400. Kendall Crowley was second in the shot put with a throw of 97-0, Salem Croy was second in the javelin with a throw of 109-0 and Ewing was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.17.
Other placewinners for the Trenton girls included the 4×100-meter relay team of Evelyn McCullough, Emma Curtis, Gott and Foster, which was third with a time of 55.36; Hurley, third in the triple jump with a mark of 30-6.75 and fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.6; Provorse, fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 15:08.77; Croy, fourth in the discus with a throw of 95-4 and fifth in the shot put with a throw of 32-3; Maci Moore, fourth in the shot put with a throw of 32-7; McCullough, fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.0; Blackburn, fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:44.48; Sidney Lynch, fifth in the javelin with a throw of 98-6; Maggie Gintz, fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 15:25.7; Kayley Griffin, fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 6-6 and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.26; and Curtis, fifth in the long jump with a mark of 13-10.25.
Trenton’s girls have now won two of the three meets they have competed at this year and have not finished worse than second as a team.
BOYS SECOND AGAIN
The Trenton High School boys track and field team was second at the Trenton Early Bird Relays this year and repeated that finish at the Trenton Relays on Thursday, Trenton tallied 75 points, falling just three points short of tying meet champions Brookfield, which had 78 points.
The Bulldogs held a 75-70 lead entering the final event of the meet, the 4×400-meter relay, but short numbers haven’t allowed Trenton to compile a relay team this season. As a result, Brookfield placed second in the meet, giving it eight points and the meet title.
The Trenton boys won four events at the meet with Jadan Whitney and Brian Ewing doing the heavy lifting. Whitney won the discus with a throw of 140-11 and was first in the shot put with a throw of 45-6. Trenton collected 18 points in the shot put event alone as Carson Burchett finished second with a throw of 45-0.
Ewing, meanwhile, won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.49 and was first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.32. He also placed runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.6 and was second in the long jump with a mark of 19-9.75. With the four finishes, Ewing scored 36 of Trenton’s 75 points by himself.
Other placewinners for Trenton included Matthew Sibbit, third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.58; Mark Trump, fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-4 and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 20.25; and Nick Wattenbarger, sixth in the javelin with a throw of 122-7.
