The Trenton Middle School track and field teams were at home at C.F. Russell Stadium on Thursday, hosting the TMS Early Bird Relays.
Trenton won the girls team title, scoring 141 team points to defeat runner-up Princeton (116) and a field of six others. The Trenton boys placed runner-up with 131 points, trailing only Hamilton’s meet-winning total of 145 points.
TRENTON GIRLS
The Trenton girls won just two events but netted a slew of second- and third-place finishes to vault the Bulldogs to the top of the standings. Savannah Triplet, Mallory Sole, Victoria Swank and Megan Spencer won the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 59.88 and Triplet, Summer Martin, Spencer and Gracyn Rongey won the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 5:08.57.
Behind the two winning relay teams, Rongey was second in the triple jump, 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run. Shay Westerhof was second in the 200- and 100-meter dashes and Triplet was second in the high jump and third in the 100-meter hurdles.
Other top-three finishers for Trenton included Kammi Phillips, second in the discus and third in the shot put; Martin, second in the pole vault; Faith Baker, second in the 100-meter hurdles; Morgan King, third in the discus; Maci Lynch, third in the 800-meter run’ and the 4×100 relay team of Eliana Cowling, Tabitha Couey, Adria Willey and Juliet Schmadeke.
“I’m very proud of the girls’ effort and performance at our first meet,” TMS girls Coach Jennifer Dickson said. “The relay teams have been working hard and took first in the 4×100 and 4×400. There were numerous personal bests set tonight and everyone contributed to our first-place overall finish.”
TRENTON BOYS
The Trenton boys won five gold medals, but it wasn’t quite enough to claim the team title at the meet.
Tyler Siemer won the long jump with a mark of 16-8 and was second in the high jump, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Keegan Brown won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.71 and was second in the pole vault. Coleman Griffin won the triple jump with a mark of 30-10.5 and was second in the 1,600-meter run. Trevor Murphy claimed Trenton’s other individual gold medal, winning the shot put with a throw of 35-2.
Trenton won one gold medal in a relay as Kaden Owen, Waylon Rowans, Ian Elbert and Sam Gibson combined to win the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:59.01.
Other top-three finishers from Trenton included Gibson, third in the pole vault; Owen, third in the triple jump; Frankie Halstead, third in the 100-meter hurdles; Cayson Harper, third in the 100-meter dash; and the 4×400-meter relay team of Griffin, Gibson, Brown and Owen, which was third.
“The boys showed a great willingness to compete and we had quite a bit of success even though we didn’t finish where we wanted to,” TMS boys Coach Brandon Boswell said. “We have work to do, but I believe this group can do some great things this season, including winning the GRC championship at the end of the season. Their parents and our community should be proud of all of our track and field athletes.”
