Bulldogs Handle Benton In Road Dual In St. Joe

Apr 5, 2018 | Sports & Recreation, Tennis

Two duals into the season, the Trenton High School boys’ tennis team looks like an early favorite to repeat as district champions.
Wednesday in St. Joseph, Trenton moved to 2-0 with a 7-2 win over Benton.
Benton’s Payton Redmer was the only Cardinal to have success against the Bulldogs. He topped Kade Ockenfels in singles play 8-5 and combined with Bostyn Horn for an 8-5 doubles victory over Ockenfels and Creed Houghton. Other than that, Trenton dominated the dual.
Nick Shields and Isaac Harris scored an 8-2 doubles win and Gabe Swann and Wyatt Neal netted an 8-0 victory.
In singles play, Shields won 8-4 at number one and Swann was an 8-0 winner at number three. Houghton won 8-2 at number four and Neal was an 8-2 winner at number five. Jeremy Elliott scored an 8-5 win at number six to close the dual.
“It’s always nice to go on the road and get a team win,” Trenton Coach Dave Sager said. “I was a little curious on how our team would start play after the weather has kept us off the courts for a few days. There were a lot of unforced errors early by everyone, but the boys cleaned that up.”
Trenton dominated junior varsity play as well, winning five of seven matches. Weston Otto won the lone JV singles match by a 6-1 decision. In doubles play, Otto and Colten Hamilton won 6-4 and Riley Raymo and Reece Miller won 6-3. Cole Soptic and Elijah Merrin fell 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker, but Trenton got wins of 6-2 from both Kasen Christy and Sabastian Brown and Harris and Hamilton. Raymo and Miller fell 6-3 in the final JV action of the day.
Trenton hosts Carrollton today at 3:30.
