There were some in the world of high school tennis who viewed Trenton’s sectional win over LeBlond last season as an upset. The Bulldogs, however, proved that victory to be no fluke as they opened the home portion of their schedule on Thursday with a 6-3 victory over the Golden Eagles at the Trenton High School tennis courts.
Action began with doubles play and LeBlond jumped on Trenton early, taking wins of 8-4 over Kade Ockenfels and Creed Houghton and 8-6 over Nick Shields and Isaac Harris. Gabe Swann and Wyatt Neal got the Bulldogs on the board with an 8-5 victory to cut the LeBlond lead to 2-1 entering singles play.
Singles play belonged to Trenton.
Shields scored an 8-0 win at number one and Ockenfels won 8-2 at number two. Swann picked up an 8-6 win at number three and Houghton won 8-3 at number four to clinch the dual victory. Neal fell 8-4 at number five, Trenton lone singles’ loss of the dual, but Jeremy Elliott won the final singles match of the day, 9-7.
“This dual was a nice win for our team,” Trenton Coach Dave Sager said. “It’s great to start off the dual season with a good win over a good tennis program from LeBlond. When we started the singles portion of play, our team was determined to finish off the dual with a team win. A couple of our singles wins were come-from-behind wins, which shows that we are a team that does not give up, even if we are down a couple of games. I’m proud of my team for the way they played and can’t wait to see them get back into dual action next week.”
JUNIOR VARSITY
Trenton was 1-3 in junior varsity action against LeBlond. Weston Otto and Colten Hamilton combined for a 7-5 win, but Riley Raymo and Reece Miller fell 6-0, Cole Soptic and Elijah Merrin lost 6-1 and Kasen Christy and Sabastian Brown were defeated 6-0.
UP NEXT
Trenton’s tennis team returns to the court on Monday, April 2, traveling to St. Joseph to face the Benton Cardinals in dual action. First serves are scheduled for 4 p.m.
