Meredith Berry of the Missouri University Extension presented the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Donita Youtsey was the program chairman.
Ms. Berry said that as a land grant university, part of the mission of Mizzou is to bring research and other assets of the university to the residents of the state. One of the areas this is done is through extension. While many persons associate extension with agriculture, Ms. Berry said extension works in other areas, including youth, community, human environmental science and continuing education.
Ms. Berry also talked about changes, including development of a new staffing plan in which all counties of the state will be placed in triads to provide services to the area. She anticipates Grundy, Livingston and Mercer counties being the triad for this area. Areas to be focused on include youth, nutrition and health and community and economic development.
The Grundy County office has been located in the courthouse for many years, but is now in the process of moving to a new location on the campus of North Central Missouri College. By having its office in the Alexander Student Center, Ms. Berry said extension and NCMC can form partnerships to benefit the community. She noted that the university’s Sinclair School of Nursing and NCMC recently signed a letter of articulation to better help NCMC nursing graduates to transfer seamlessly into the MU bachelor’s degree program.
During the business meeting, it was announced that the board has discussed holding some of the club meetings at other times to accommodate those members who are unable to attend the noon meetings on Thursday. Breakfast meetings have been discussed, however, no final decision has been made.
Next week’s program chairman will be Gary Jordan.
