For Jadan Whitney, the dream of a state titel is still alive. Mason owen and Mark Trump, meanwhile, will be chasing third-place medals.
Whitney (195) scored a quarterfinal win over Lawson’s Wyatt Becker Friday morning to advance to the semifinals and guarantee himself a state medal.
Owen (220) and Trump (182), meanwhile, have each gone 1-1 at the tournament between Thursday’s opening matches and Friday’s morning session.
After a win by fall over Jacob Bieser Thursday, Owen was pinned by Summit Christian Academy’s Brett Campbell in the second round of their 220-pound quarterfinal match Friday morning. The defeat sends Owen to wrestlebacks this afternoon.
Trump dropped his opening match with Noah Elmore of Whitfield, the top-ranked 182-pounder in the state, by a 10-2 major decision. Trump would battle back, picking up a narrow 3-2 decision win in the first round of wrestlebacks to keep his medal hopes alive heading into Friday. Like Owen, he is sceduled to be in second-round wrestleback action this afternoon.
For Whitney, the opening round win came easily enough, despite not being able to pin Keilan Jaques of El Dorado Springs. Whitney picked up two takedowns in the first period, yielding an escape after each one. On his third takedown of the first period, Whitney was able to get back-points, but no pin as the match went to the second period with the Trenton junior up 8-2. Whitney was awarded a point for Jaques stalling in the second period and scored his fourth takedown of the match. Jaques added two points on escapes and Whitney’s lead was 10-4 entering the final period. There Whitney started on bottom, escaped and recorded another takedown to win the match by a 13-4 decision.
In the quarterfinals, Whitney again went the distance, but again scored a decision victory by a comfortable margin. The first period was screless, but Whitney started the second down and quickly escaped. He would secure a takedown in the period to go up 3-0 entering the third period. There, Whitney dominated, picking up two more takedowns and just missing out on back points on multiple occassions. The end result was the 7-2 decision, however, sending Whitney to the semifinals scheduled for this evening.
