The Grundy County Museum, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution and the Missouri Humanities Council, will present “Hometown Teams,” a traveling Smithsonian exhibit.
The “Hometown Teams” exhibit will open on Memorial Day (Monday, May 28) and will include the traditional flag raising Ceremony and rifle salute by the VFW as part of the museum’s events on that day.
Area residents will remember a previous Smithsonian exhibit called New Harmonies that was the featured exhibit in 2010. “Hometown Teams” will be similar to that exhibit.
The theme of the new exhibit is the role of sports in the American culture, especially in small towns, where everyone benefits from participation in sports teams….the athletes, fans, cheerleaders, bands, referees, coaches, communities and the sponsoring schools and organizations.
The Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit presents the sports experience from a national perspective through pylons with pictures plus audio and video presentations. The local museum will present a companion exhibit that celebrates the experiences of Grundy County’s athletes through information panels, video interviews, photographs, stories and personal presentations.
“We are very pleased to be selected as one of six museums in Missouri to host this Smithsonian exhibit in 2018,” Museum President Corey Walker said. “It is an outstanding opportunity for our museum and the community.”
Tad Trombley and Phil Schlarb, co-chairs of the exhibit committee, recently attended a two-day training seminar regarding promotion and presentation of the “Hometown Teams” exhibit.
