On Tuesday, Trenton High School girls basketball Head Coach Brian Upton celebrated his birthday in just about the most fitting way he could – coaching the Bulldogs.
Like almost every other birthday and milestone the Trenton girls celebrate, there were cupcakes. Like almost every other game Trenton has played this season, the Bulldogs dominated the competition.
The latest victim was the Cameron Dragons, whom Trenton throttled 75-25, improving to 23-1 overall on the season with just one game remaining before the district tournament ramps up next week.
Cameron’s first bucket gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead. That would be the last time Cameron was in front. Trenton pounced on the Dragons’ passing lanes and converted steals into fast break layups, running out to a 21-4 first quarter lead. The Bulldogs dialed in from distance, knocking down three-pointers at a nearly 45 percent clip as the lead swelled through three quarters. Trenton led 42-11 at halftime and 63-18 entering the fourth quarter.
“It was really good to see us shoot the way we did,” Upton said of his team’s performance from beyond the arc. “We have been working a lot in practice, not necessarily on shooting three’s, but just on some form shooting and getting our touch back, so it was nice to see that.”
Trenton had four players in double figures with Ainsley Tolson’s 25 pacing the Trenton effort. Mykah Hurley followed with 15, Maci Moore had 14 and Salem Croy finished with 11. A total of seven different Bulldogs scored in the win.

“We had four girls in double figures tonight,” Upton said. “I’m just really proud of how we share the basketball and how we take good shots. Sometimes we give up a good shot for a better shot, we get out and run the floor and it all just leads to good team basketball.”
As good as Trenton’s offensive night was, the Bulldogs defense continued to look nearly impenetrable. Cameron rarely got even a decent look at the rim. The Bulldogs netted 14 steals, pulled down 16 defensive rebounds and got a blocked shot from Saedee Jackson. Cameron never scored more than seven points in a single quarter.
“Defensively we have been dialed in for a couple or three weeks, especially in the two Stanberry games,” Upton said. “I think defensively we are really starting to understand how hard it is sometimes to play man and that you not only have to give help, but you have to help the helper. I think we have done a good job and we have got two or three girls who are really good at anticipating. They have quick hands and I think we are pretty dialed in defensively. We will have a better gauge of that on Thursday.”
Tolson added five assists and four steals to her 25 points and Hurley backed up her 15 points with six steals. Moore finished with four rebounds in addition to her 14 points and Salem Croy had two steals to go with her 11 points. Sidney Lynch followed with six points, eight rebounds and three assists while Haley Kidd and Kendall Crowley scored two points each to round out the Trenton total.
