Area School Boards Offer Administrative Contracts

Administrator contracts and school calendars were approved during meetings on Monday night of the Grundy R-5, Laredo R-7 and Pleasant View R-6 boards of education.
Grundy R-5
The Grundy R-5 Board of Education offered administrative contracts during its meeting.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board voted to offer contracts to Randy Huffman and Dr. Anne Billington for the 2018-19 school year, with salaries to be determined as part of the budget process. Huffman’s contract will be part-time as principal for grades seven through 12. Dr. Billington’s contract will be full-time as the elementary principal.
The board set a hearing for 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 15 to hear public comment regarding the start of school for the 2018-19 school year. The regular board meeting will follow. Both the hearing and meeting will be at the high school in Galt.
The board approved several new policies and updates as well as the instruction effectiveness and At-Risk programs. An update was given on maintenance projects, including bid specifications for the gym roof and bleacher maintenance.
It was announced that year to date attendance at the high school was 96.06 percent and that 31 students had an attendance rate of 98 percent or higher during December and January. The girls basketball team was recognized for winning first place in the Meadville Tournament. Also recognized were Adysan Rains and Cristal Barriga as elementary school students of the month and the spelling bee participants. A list of upcoming activities and events at all grade levels was also presented.
An executive session was held for personnel, with the board taking action on the two administrative contracts.
The next meeting will be on Thursday, March 15.
Laredo R-7
The Laredo R-7 Board of Education offered a contract to the administrator during its meeting.
According to information provided by Board Secretary Mona Loyd, Misty Foster was offered a one-year contract to serve as administrator for the 2018-19 school year. The salary is to be determined at a later date. Action was taken following an executive session of the board.
The board approved the proposed 2018-19 school calendar, with the first day of classes to be Aug. 21 and the last day of school set for May 9, 2019. Also approved was an increase in adult meal prices, which will be increased to $1.80 for breakfast and $3.03 for lunch. The amounts were determined by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education calculations.
The board approved matching 20 percent of the funds necessary to receive an E-Rate grant and will allow the Grundy County Health Department to hold a health fair for district employees on April 19. The board will pay the basic package cost, up to $25, per participating staff member to promote employee wellness.
A field trip to Kansas City for students in kindergarten through second grade was approved for April 25. The district will advertise for mowing bids, which will be reviewed at the March meeting. The board reviewed, but took no action, on building improvements, transportation and the budget.
It was announced the district has one year left on its audit contract with Conrad and Higgins LLC and that the spring concert will be on April 24. Applications for the Murphy Scholarship are due by Thursday, March 15 in the school office. The board recognized district spelling bee winners.
No election will be held in April for the board as the number of candidates filing match the number of open positions. The two filing were both incumbents, Brad Wilford and Matt Foster.
The next meeting of the board will be on Monday, March 12.
Pleasant View R-6
An administrative contract was offered during the meeting of the Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education.
According to information provided by Board Secretary Brenda Allnutt, Rebecca Steinhoff was offered an extension to her administrative contract, with the salary to be determined as part of the budget process. Her contract will be for three years through the 2020-21 school year.
The board also hired Crystal Stretch of Chula and Sara Bertram of Trenton as early childhood special education paraprofessionals. Discussion was held on placing funds in a certificate of deposit, but no action was taken.
The board approved the 2018-19 school calendar, with the first day of school being on Aug. 22 and the last day of classes on May 10, 2019. The bid of $100 per month (after the E-Rate discount) from Bluebird for Internet service was approved.
Also approved were class trips for the fourth through sixth grade to Chillicothe on April 5 (Meet the Author Kimberly Brubaker Bradley) and the first through fourth grade to Kansas City (Science City/Planetarium), with the first and second grade classes going on May 10 and the third and fourth grade classes going on May 3.
It was announced the school would be hosting a veterans luncheon on Friday, Feb. 16 from noon to 1 p.m. to welcome home members of National Guard’s 548th Transportation Unit. Other upcoming dates include the first fifth and sixth grade basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at R-6 and the alumni/staff/student basketball game on March 24. School will be in session on Monday. Feb. 19, as a make-up day for classes missed due to inclement weather.
The board heard reports from teachers Cassie Cordray, first grade; Jamie Whitney, special education; and Hayley Anderson, fourth grade.
The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, March 13.
