A fire on Sunday afternoon destroyed the two-story home of Charles and Johnna Smiley in Galt. The Galt Fire Protection District and Grundy County Rural Fire Protection District were called to the scene around 2 p.m. and found the home engulfed when they arrived. Smiley was the only person at home at the time of the fire and was able to escape before the home fell in. Smiley said that he was watching television and heard a noise in the upstairs area. When he opened the doors to an adjoining room, the floor to the attic area came crashing down. While the cause of the blaze is undetermined, Smiley said he believed it was electrical in nature and most likely started in the attic area. Mrs. Smiley and their son were not home at the time of the fire. The Smileys, who had lived in the home for 32 years, are currently staying with Mrs. Smiley’s mother, Norma Searcy.
