The Trenton High School wrestling team finally had a good day as a team on Saturday at the Sam Martin Invitational in Plattsburg. The Bulldogs have enjoyed a lot of individual success this season, but on Saturday, Trenton was able to get a taste of a little success as a team as well.
“Teamwise, we had a pretty good day at Plattsburg,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “We had no individual champions, but we had a lot of kids scoring points for the team and picking up bonus points by getting pins.”
As usual, Mason Owen (220) and Jadan Whitney (195) led the way for Trenton. Both wrestlers placed third at their respective weights to give the Bulldogs a good base for their team score.
Whitney finished 3-2 at the tournament with his two losses coming to Brett Campbell of Summit Christian Academy, the top-ranked 195-pounder in the state at the Class 1 level, and Kearney’s Brett Mordecai, ranked first at the weight at the Class 3 level.
“I was really proud of Jadan even though we really wanted those two matches to go the other way,” Bacon said. “But, these are the kind of matches that make you a better wrestler.”
Owen ran a 4-1 record with all four wins coming by fall – the first three very quickly.
“Mason also had a really good day in a tough weight class,” Bacon said. “In his first three matches he pinned his opponents in under 15 seconds with a dominant display of his technique. We were in a close match in the semis going into the second period tied at zero and Mason made one mistake, which led to him being pinned. After that match, though, he came back and pinned his opponent in the third place match. I admire Mason’s competitive mentality and his ability to bounce back after a tough loss.”
Trenton also had fourth-place finishers in Brice Gibler (126) and Mark Trump (182). Gibler was 2-3, but both wins came by pin. Trump went 2-2 and also picked up both of his wins by fall.
Noah Lewis returned to Trenton’s lineup after suffering an injury prior to Christmas break. He went 2-3 at 152, with both wins coming by fall. Lucas Clark was 2-3 at 160, with both wins coming by fall and Nick Wattenbarger was 3-2 at170, earning two wins by fall.
Eric Lovett was 1-3 at 145, Jarvis Collis was 1-3 at 285 and Payden McCullough went 1-2 at 138. Also in action for Trenton were Quincy Griffin (113) and Canyon VonBurg (120), both of whom went 0-4 on the day.
Trenton travels to Brookfield on Tuesday for a triangular beginning at 5:30 p.m.
