Newtown-Harris Board OKs Camera Purchases

The Newtown-Harris Board of Education met on Monday evening, approving the purchase of surveillance cameras, hearing reports, adopting policies and approving an extension for the superintendent’s contract.
According to information provided by Superindent Dr. Kim Johnson, the board voted to purchase 24 surveillance cameras to be installed within and outside district facilities. The cameras are to be in place within the next month and will be purchased with Title IV federal funds.
Board members heard reports on the secondary English and social studies programs. Andrea Luper, seventh through 12th grade English instructor, focused on grade level language arts classes and projects for students in grades seven through 12. She also shared the process for creating the district newsletter that is distributed every two weeks and detailed the use of a daily news feature called Hall Talk that is distributed throughout the building.
Nathan Hopkins presented a report on the social studies program, telling about the current focus in each class. Among the projects he is working on are the Mexican/American War, current events, government and personal finance. He told board members that in addition to quizzes, tests and informal assessments, he uses a social studies educational site called “Kahoot!” to help students review for assessments.
Principal Dustin Freeman discussed upcoming events, including Homecoming Week, which will be held Jan. 22 to 26, with the homecoming basketball game to be played against Winston at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26.
Freeman reported that the Professional Learning Committee will be attending the Powerful Learning Conference at the Lake of the Ozarks on Jan 28-30. In addition to Freeman, those attending will be Stephanie Oaks, Susanna Crawford and Staci Freeman.
It was noted that the filing date for board candidates ends on Jan. 16 and board members reappointed Linda Hague as school district liaison for foster care. Policies involving student welfare-students in foster care and admission of homeless students were adopted.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 12.
