Project updates were among items addressed this week by boards of education at the Pleasant View R-6 and Princeton R-5 schools.
Pleasant View R-6
The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education met on Tuesday to discuss various items.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rebecca Steinhoff, the board approved bids from Bill’s Repair of Trenton for air conditioning and heating of the gymnasium as well as a bid from SRI Contractors of Greentop to remove ceiling insulation in the gymnasium and install closed cell spray foam insulation with a fire barrier. Also approved was a field trip to Kansas City for the fifth through eighth grade students on May 4. Students will visit the Truman Library, Steamboat Arabia Museum, Chip’s Chocolate Factory, the Royals Hall of Fame Museum and attend a Royals baseball game.
Each board member was recognized with a certificate for their service to the district and students. Board Member Recognition month is in January.
The Dec. 1 child count for special education has been finalized with an overall decrease from last school year of two prekindergarten through eighth grade students in the special education program. The fifth and sixth grade basketball season has been finalized with the first ballgame to be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at R-6.
Luke Gibson and Ben Thomas are currently the only two persons who have filed to date for the upcoming school board election on April 3. Candidates have until Tuesday, Jan. 16 to file and can do so in the superintendent’s office at the school during regular business hours.
The next regular board meeting will be held on at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12.
Princeton R-5
The Princeton R-5 Board of Education spent a good portion of its time discussing the district’s construction project when a meeting was held Monday evening.
According to information provided by Superintendent Jerry Girdner, the board met with Jeremy Proctor of Ellison-Auxier Architects and Dennis Gutshall, who provided an update on the construction project at the school. Work resumed on Monday as temperatures for the week would allow for blocklayers to continue building the external walls at the elementary building. A number of improvements were approved to be completed by E.L. Crawford Construction Company, including additional sidewalk replacement east of the Stacy Center, demolition of old foundations south of that building, the addition of a French drain on the northwest corner of that building, additional concrete paving near the new press box location, the addition of a four-inch mason wall in the new fitness room, an upgrade in external metal panels for the Stacy addition and the addition of an eight-foot rear walkway for the football field bleachers.
In other business, the board reviewed the 2017-2018 sports interest survey submitted by students. The district is evaluating the new GRC divisions and sports offerings, comparing them with what is currently offered in the Princeton R-5 District. Board members were also presented with a building-specific report for the 2016-2017 APR scores and approved the 2000 series board policies.
It was announced that candidates for the April 3 school board election may file for office through Jan. 16 and as of Jan. 9, Chad Smith and Blake Boxley have completed the paperwork for the two seats on the board. School will not be in session on Jan. 15 and the office will be closed.
Following an executive session, the board accepted the resignation of elementary instructor Trish Theiss.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 12.
