Wrestlers Return To Action, Draw Split In Maysville

Jan 5, 2018 | Sports & Recreation, Wrestling

The Trenton High School wrestling team went back to work after a welcome two and one-half week layoff. The time away allowed Trenton to heal up a bit.
The Bulldogs were in triangular action in Maysville on Thursday night, scoring a 54-30 win over Carrollton before falling 42-36 to the host Wolverines.
Against Carrollton, Trenton capitalized off several open weights. The Trojans were empty at eight spots in the lineup and the Bulldogs were able to put a wrestler in the circle at each of those spots. Trenton, meanwhile, was open at 138, 160 and 106 – all spots in which Carrollton did have a wrestler.
That left just three matches to be contested. Lucas Clark, wrestling down at 152 from his usual 160 spot, was pinned as was Quincy Griffin at 113. Nick Wattenbarger gave Trenton its lone victory on the mat, pinning his opponent at 170 pounds.
“Carrollton had a lot of open weights,” Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “Our one head-to-head win came at 170 when Nick Wattenbarger got the first takedown and ended up with a pin.”
The Bulldogs were unable to get a sweep of the night’s matches as Maysville slipped past Trenton by just six points.
“I thought our dual against Maysville was very winnable,” Bacon said. “But, we made too many mistakes and let too many chances to score go by.”
Trenton jumped ahead in the first match of the dual when Canyon VonBurg (120) injured his opponent, who was unable to continue in the second period. That gave the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. But Maysville took over from that point. Luca Nichols lost by a 24-7 technical fall at 126 and Brice Gibler was pinned at 132 before the Bulldogs were open at 138. Eric Lovett lost by a 14-6 major decision, Payden McCullough was pinned at 152, Clark was pinned at 160 and Nick Wattenbarger lost by a 9-2 decision at 170.
Trenton dominated the heavyweights, clawing its way back into the dual. Mark Trump (182) won by fall and Jadan Whitney returned from an injury to secure a pinfall victory at 195. Mason Owen (220) and Jarvis Collis (285) each won by forfeit.
The run brought Trenton to within six points – a single match result – but the two remaining weights saw Trenton open at 106 and Maysville open at 113. That kept the margin at six points as Maysville held on.
“Head-to-head Canyon VonBurg got a win at 120 when his opponent was unable to finish the match due to injury in the second period,” Bacon said. “Our next head-to-head victories came at 182 and 195 as Mark Trump and Jadan Whitney both pinned their opponents in the first period.
“Again, I feel there were some matches that we could have had a victory in if we would have stayed out of bad positions and capitalized on scoring opportunities.”
With the split on the night, Trenton moved to 4-6 in dual action on the season.
