Is weight loss on your list of New Year’s resolutions or are you just looking to improve your health during 2018?
If so, you will want to be a part of the 11th Annual Green Hills Wellness Challenge, sponsored by the Grundy County Health Department, the Ketcham Community Center, Hy-Vee and the Trenton Republican-Times.
Registration for this year’s challenge will take place on Thursday, Jan. 11 and Friday, Jan. 12 at the Ketcham Community Center or the Grundy County Health Department during regular hours. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate or have a signed parental consent.
The format will be the same as past years, with participants weighing in weekly to be eligible for prizes. The challenge will run for 12 weeks, with the ending date of April 6. There is a $10 entry fee.
The prize pool is divided among all participants who have lost 10 percent or more of their initial body weight at the end of the challenge. The Health Department will contribute $1,500 plus a portion of the entry fees to the cash prize pool. The 2017 prize pool was $2,280. There were 38 winners and each pocketed $60 cash. In addition to the cash prize, there are weekly drawings among all participants that weigh in that week.
Each participant will receive a food and exercise journal when they sign up. Completed journals will be entered into a drawing for two one-year memberships to the KCC and two one-year subscriptions to the Republican-Times newspaper.
Participants from last year’s Wellness Challenge are eligible to win a $300 maintenance prize. This prize will be awarded to the person who has maintained the highest percentage of weight loss since the end of last year’s challenge in April.
Weigh-ins for the maintenance prize will be held on Jan. 11-12 at the GCHD and the KCC during regular business hours. There is no fee to weigh in for the maintenance prize only.
To help you meet your nutrition goals, Hy-Vee’s Registered Dietitian, Cindy Eivins, will offer nutrition classes during the challenge. Dates will be announced later.
All actual weights will be kept confidential, however, the percentage of weight lost each week will run in the Trenton Republican-Times newspaper.
