Rita D. Chrisman Hughs, a 72-year-old resident of Trenton, died on Thursday morning, Dec. 28, 2017 at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at the Union (Coon Creek) Baptist Church, west of Trenton, with Rev. Doug Crawford and Ron Ward officiating. Burial will be in the Edinburg Cemetery.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 7 o’clock tonight (Friday, Dec. 29, 2017) at the Slater Funeral Home in Trenton.
Mrs. Hughs was born on May 20, 1945 in Lindley, the daughter of Eldon George and Dorothy May Dowell Chrisman. She attended Central and Norton schools in Trenton. Before retiring, she was employed as a CNA-Med Tech at Eastview Manor and was later employed at Trenton Foods.
She was a member of Union (Coon Creek) Baptist Church.
She was married on July 4, 1961 in Trenton to Robert A. Hughs, who preceded her death on Sept. 19, 2016.
Survivors include one daughter, Erma Newton and her husband, Lawrence of Brimson; two sons, Timothy Hughs and his wife, Cathy of Newburg and Kenneth Hughs and his wife, Sherri of Trenton; eight grandchildren, Joshua Hughs, Chrystal Craig, Robert George Hughs, Ryan Hughs, Rodney Hughs, Rustin Hughs, Keona Jenkins and Kaila McClaflin; three step-grandchildren, Matthew Cannon, Jennifer Cannon and Jacee Devaul; 10 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Georgia Chrisman, Gennelle “Nellie” Chrisman, Daisy May and Elnora Knapp; two brothers, Eldon “Bub” Chrisman and Franklin Layson; two grandchildren, Timothy Hughs and Cara Hughs; one niece, Dorothy Lee Chrisman; and one nephew, Mathew Chrisman.
Memorials are suggested to the Coon Creek Cemetery. They may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
