Handpicking three quarters from a game, a person could make the claim that the Trenton High School boys basketball team is on pretty even footing with the Maryville Spoofhounds. The problem is basketball games are made up of four quarters, not three.
Had it not been for the second quarter in Friday’s meeting between the two schools, the end of the contest might have been quite a bit more exciting. As it was, however, Maryville outscored Trenton 19-3 in the second quarter, propelling the Spoofhounds to a 66-46 win over the Bulldogs at North Central Missouri College’s Holiday Hoops.
Trenton kept pace early, trailing just 15-13 after the initial eight minutes. The following eight minutes belonged to Maryville in a big way. Trenton was only outscored by two points in the second half, but the damage from the second quarter could not be erased.
“I thought we competed well and played with a lot of commitment,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “Our second quarter was tough, but other than that lapse it was a good game for us.”
Leading the way for Trenton was the duo of Lathan Croy and Dylan Harris, both of whom finished the game with 15 points. Croy would also add 10 boards and three assists. Carson Radcliff followed with 11 points and five steals and Max McNabb scored four. Isaac Harris rounded out the team’s total with one point.
“I was glad to see Lathan fighting for boards and playing with a lot of confidence,” Austin said. “Dylan’s shooting keeps getting better and it was a great game for Radcliff, too. (Maryville) is a really strong team and it was good to know we can compete with them.”
With the loss, Trenton fell to 4-6 on the season.
