A full slate of activities are planned as the annual Trenton Downtown Christmas event takes place this weekend.
Events kick off on Friday night with a scavenger hunt for individuals ages 18 and older (unless accompanied by an adult). Teams of three or more can pay $25 per team to search for clues and find the items on the scavenger list. Registration will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Trenton’s newest downtown business, Trey’s Place, located at 1109 Main St., with the hunt to begin at 8 p.m. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Saturday kicks off with a breakfast with Mrs. Santa Claus and the Elves, which will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the VFW Hall. An eat-what-you-want, pay-what-you-want breakfast of breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy will be served and there will be photo opportunities for children as well.
Downtown activities get under way at 4 p.m. with a cookie walk, sponsored by Hodge Presbyterian Church, and a soup supper will take place at the VFW Hall. Cookies will be offered for sale individually or by the dozen while the soup supper is an eat-what-you-want, pay-what-you-want meal. The event continues until 8 p.m.
Sesquicentennial Park will be the site of the annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, which begins at 5 p.m. with the welcoming prayer given by Pastor Steve Merrin of the Trenton Area Ministerial Alliance. Trenton Downtown Improvement Association President Dave Bain and Trenton Park Board member Gary Schuett will dedicate the new tree being placed in the park in memory of the late Elvin Noel, long-time owner of Howard’s Department Store and former TDIA president. Mayor Dr. Nick McHargue will then preside over the official tree and park lighting.
A Christmas parade of golf carts and ATV’s, which will include Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place in the downtown area at 5:30 p.m. Santa will be available in the park gazebo for pictures, beginning at 5:45 p.m.
A children’s craft area will be open at “The Space” from 6 to 7:45 p.m. The Rissler Elementary School Honor Choir will perform at 6:20 p.m. at the park gazebo while the Mic-O-Say Dancers are set to perform in the Gilworth Furniture Store at 6:30 p.m. The evening will end with a community singing of “Silent Night” at the Five Points flag at 7:45 p.m. There will also be carriage rides throughout the evening.
Several downtown businesses plan to be open, so those downtown will be able to get some of their Christmas shopping done.
