The Trenton High School junior varsity basketball teams were in action for the first time this season, playing host to Cameron’s second teams on Monday night. Each school scored a victory as Trenton took the girls game 41-14, but fell 50-25 in the boys contest.
TRENTON JV GIRLS
The Trenton girls looked pretty strong in their debut, using a trapping defense that created numerous runouts. The Bulldogs started the game on a 13-2 run and had the game well in hand by halftime, taking a 23-4 lead into the locker room at the break. The Bulldogs were equally as dominant in the second half, taking the game by 27 points.
Haley Kidd led the Trenton offense, scoring 11 points, and also picked up two steals on the defensive end. Maci Moore added nine points and Allena Allen had eight points and five steals. Trenton would get seven points from Saedee Jackson and four points, five assists and four steals from McKayla Blackburn. Lexi Whitaker rounded out the Trenton total with two points and had five steals and four assists and Kendall Crowley finished with two steals and two assists.
“It was good to finally play someone besides our varsity starters,” Coach John Cowling said. “I thought Lexi, McKayla and Haley did a great job defensively on the front of our press and the girls did a great job sharing the ball tonight.”
With the win, Trenton’s junior varsity girls established a 1-0 record to start the season.
TRENTON JV BOYS
The Trenton boys were unable to follow suit, struggling early as Cameron raced out to a 16-2 lead. Trenton was able to come around a bit offensively after Cameron’s initial punch, but the Bulldogs still trailed 29-16 at halftime.
Trenton opened the second half on a 5-0 run to trim the Cameron advantage to just eight points, but Cameron responded by dialing up a full-court press that gave Trenton fits. Trenton managed just four more points the rest of the way as Cameron doubled up the Bulldogs, 50-25.
“The boys worked really hard,” Coach Kameron Cool said. “We have a lot of things we need to improve on, but the effort was there.”
Freshman Camdyn Leeper led the way for Trenton, scoring 10 points in the loss. Brycin Loyd added six points, Gavin Roeder had three and Matt Sibbit, Preston Harris and Royce Jackson all had two points each.
With the loss, Trenton’s JV boys established an 0-1 record on the season.
