The Grundy R-5 girls picked up a season-opening victory over Linn County on Monday night in Galt. Morgan Axtell led the way for the Panthers, going for 20 points and four steals.
Grundy (1-0) also got 11 points, nine assists and six steals from Jandie Peterson and 10 points and four steals from Emma Baxter. Aubrey Gann pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

The Grundy R-5 boys got off to a strong start in their season-opening game with Linn County, but foul trouble quickly caught up with the Panthers.
Grundy jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter, but picked up several fouls in doing so. The Panthers were forced to go to the bench at times and back off their defense a bit and Linn County took advantage, scoring nearly 70 points in the final three quarters combined to roar past the Panthers.
Bryson Gann led Grundy (0-1) with 17 points and eight rebounds and Tanner Williams added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Wayne Baxter had 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks and Caden Gann had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Mercer Girls 49

The Mercer girls first game following last year’s state championship ended in defeat on Monday night as the Cardinals lost by a single point to Hale on the road.
Mercer trailed 19-11 after a quarter of play, but rallied back, tying the game by the end of the third quarter. In the final frame, Mercer was outscored by the one point that proved to be the final margin of victory.
Aubrey Wilson led the Cardinals (0-1) with 19 points while Rayne Kost and Esabel Holt added 11 and nine points respectively.

Hale Boys 49

The Mercer boys were able to get their season off to a 1-0 start, picking up a 26-point win over Hale on Monday night. After falling behind 14-12 in the opening stanza, Mercer’s offense took over, producing 20 points in the second quarter and 24 points in the third. Hale couldn’t keep pace as the Cardinals steadily pulled away en route to the win.
Cam Hartley scored 27 points to pace Mercer (1-0), which also got 18 points from Hunter Shipley and 11 from John Johnson.
