North Central Women Win John Wood Classic, Men Top Park

The North Central Missouri College women’s basketball team is on a roll. Over the weekend, the Lady Pirates pushed their current winning streak to five games, defeating Bryant & Stratton 99-62 on Saturday and John Wood 59-46 on Sunday at the John Wood Classic in Quincy, IL.
The five-game stretch has vaulted the once 1-2 Lady Pirates to 6-2 overall on the season.
“We have really started to play together,” North Central head coach Jenni Croy said. “The girls are doing a great job of utilizing our inside game and then the posts are recognizing when to kick (the ball) back out.”
On Saturday, North Central blasted Bryant & Stratton, jumping out to a 29-11 first quarter lead and never looking back. The Lady Pirates outscored their opponents in all four quarters, leading to the 37-point victory.
Sarah Lamp and Whitley Richman each had double-doubles in the win with Lamp going for 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and Richman adding 14 points and 10 rebounds. Samm Jett had 18 points and five assists and Kendey Eaton finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Nicole Kost also scored 12 points and had four assists.
North Central found itself locked in a much closer battle on Sunday, but the end result was the same as the Lady Pirates scored a 13-point win.
The difference in this game was the middle quarters as the Lady Pirates outscored the host club 26-15 in the two frames combined.
Eaton led North Central in this one, scoring 19 points. Richman had 12 points and eight rebounds and Lamp had nine points, 13 rebounds and three assists.
MEN SCORE WIN
The North Central men welcomed the Park University junior varsity to the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton on Friday night and picked up a big win, though the victory was anything but in hand at halftime.
Park kept things interesting for a half, trailing the Pirates just 41-35 at the break. But North Central would overwhelm the visitors in the second half. NCMC put together one of its stronger 20-minute stretches of the season to date, outscoring Park 56-37 to ice the win.
“We started out a bit sluggish in the first half, but I was pleased with how our guys adjusted and how focused they were in the second half,” Pirates’ head coach Jeremy Esry said. “I thought our attention to detail, especially on the defensive end was key. and it will have to be again on Tuesday when we go up against Southwestern.”
The duo of Jalen Gant and Ryan Ward again paced the Pirates. Gant scored a game-high 24 points to go with 12 rebounds while Ward added 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists. NCMC also got 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals from Jordan Reece.
The win moved the North Central men to 5-2 overall on the season.

North Central Women: The Lady Pirates travel to Creston, IA on Tuesday to face off with Southwestern Community College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
North Central Men: The Pirates will be in action in Creston as well on Tuesday night, taking on Southwestern, the defending NJCAA Division II national champions. That game tips off following the women’s contest at 7:30.
