Reservoir Update Given

Nov 10, 2017 | Headline News

Brad Scott, who is coordinating efforts for the East Locust Creek Reservoir Project in Sullivan County, was the speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Duane Urich was the program chairman, with Gary Black introducing Scott.
The original intent of the project is to provide a water source for communities in Sullivan County as well as surrounding counties. The reservoir is located five and one-half miles north of Milan and will cover a 2,352-acre area with 84 miles of shoreline. It is anticipated to generate around 7 million gallons of water per day. Properties needed for the project have either all been purchased or are under contract and dirt work is anticipated to start in 2019. Scott noted there are still several permitting processes that have to be completed before actual construction can begin.
Scott said that the lake portion of the project will be set up so that private development can take place, including homes and businesses. He noted there are some public access areas, including a marina and fishing sites, and that public use of the lake is encouraged. When the project is completed, nearly $1 billion of federal, state and local funding will have been spent. He noted that a local sales tax passed by citizens of Sullivan County helped purchase the majority of property needed.
He recognized the efforts of current U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, former U.S. Sen. Kit Bond and former State Sen. Brad Lager, who helped get funding for the project as well as assisted with legislation needed for the project to move forward.
During the business meeting, members were told that the Christmas social on Dec. 14 would be held at Black Silo Winery with more information to be announced later. Members will also be helping with Holiday Hoops, with that date to be announced.
Next week’s program chairman is Brian Upton, who will have Trenton High School winter sports coaches as the speakers.
