Area Schools Plan Veterans Day Programs

Nov 7, 2017 | Headline News

With the 2017 Veterans Day holiday falling on a Saturday, area schools will be holding programs to recognize both current and former military personnel on Friday, Nov. 10.
The Trenton R-9, Pleasant View R-6, Grundy R-5, Spickard R-2 and Laredo R-7 school districts will all be having events to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the military. Both morning and afternoon events are being planned.
S.M. Rissler Elementary School will hold its annual Veterans Day assembly at 8 a.m. in the school multipurpose room. Members of the student council will be presenting a program and military personnel attending will be recognized. Refreshments will be served to all veterans in the cafeteria following the program.
The Trenton High School Key Club and Trenton Middle School Builders Club will be hosting a coffee at 1 p.m. in the THS Commons. Students are being asked to invite a veteran to attend the afternoon coffee and program, set for a 2 p.m. start. Veterans attending are asked to check into the school office when they arrive. If they have been invited to attend the event by a student, they will be asked to share the name of the student who invited them. That student will then be called from class to escort the veteran to the coffee, which will also include refreshments of lemonade and cookies. Veterans attending will also be able to view student-created tributes prepared especially for this event.
A middle school/high school program, organized by the vocal music department and various student organizations, will follow in the high school gymnasium, under the direction of TMS/THS vocal music instructor Tyler Busick.
The Pleasant View R-6 School will be hosting a breakfast for veterans, beginning at 8:15 a.m. Students will also be providing music during the meal.
At Grundy R-5 Elementary School in Humphreys, a program is scheduled at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium featuring music by the junior high/high school choir. State Rep. Nate Walker will be the guest speaker and a flag ceremony is also planned. All current and past service members, along with the public, are invited to attend.
The program at the Spickard R-2 School District will be at 11 a.m. Organized by music teacher Olive Smith, the students will be performing musical numbers and poems. Veterans are also invited to stay for lunch after the event. Those planning to stay are asked to call the school office at 485-6121 before Friday.
Laredo R-7 School will hold its Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 13. Veterans are invited for breakfast at 7:30 a.m., with a program to follow in the school gymnasium. Melissa Williams is in charge of the event.
