It may have been expected, but the speed and efficency displayed by the Princeton Tigers as they dismantled Maysville Friday night at home on Eddie Allen Field was still impressive.
The Tigers struck early and often in a 55-8 rout of the visiting Wolverines, advancing to the Class 1, District 8 semifinals as a result.
One of the biggest story lines in the lop-sided affair was Princeton’s discovery of a kicking game with Moses Zuniga, who successfully booted five-of-six extra-point attempts.
“We played the most complete game we have played to this point,” Princeton head coach Thomas Hotmer said. “We had a great kicking game and our defense was able to get quick stops allowing us the opportunity to block three punts and set up our offense. Our kids came out to play hard and it showed in all phases.”
Early on, the usual suspects did the damage for the Tigers as Andrew Smith tallied two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, scoring the Tigers’ first touchdown on a 44-yard run and following it up with a nine-yard touchdown run. Those would be Smith’s only two carries of the night.
The Tigers’ wouldn’t need any more.
Tanner Coffman punched in Princeton’s third score of the night on a one-yard run and Smith went to the air in the second quarter, throwing touchdowns to Blaine Millburn, Clayton Sweeten and Cameron Gittings. Garrett Enright, on his only carry of the night, scored on a 29-yard run as the Tigers took a 48-0 lead into halftime.
Princeton would tack on just one score in the second half as Smith and Millburn hooked up for a second time. After that, Princeton eased off the accelerator, resting up for next weeks semifinals challenge – the South Harrison Bulldogs.
“We were able to get a lot of kids the ball on offense and rotate a lot of kids in to get them playoff experience on both sides of the ball,” Hotmer said. “It was a total team effort and we have to continue to build off this game as we progress into a tougher team each week.”
The Tigers moved to 10-0 on the season with the win. Of those 10 wins, South Harrison was the toughest out for the Tigers, who defeated the Bulldogs 20-6 in week eight.
The rematch kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday in Princeton.
