After suffering its first non-tournament loss in nearly two full years, the Trenton High School girls tennis team finally got its opportunity to put that rare defeat in the past on Monday as the Bulldogs traveled to St. Joseph to take on the Benton Cardinals. Trenton did just that, too, picking up a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals and returning to Trenton on the winning side.
Trenton jumped out to its usual lead after doubles play, taking two of the three matches contested. Claire Utley and Lauren Dolan fell 8-5, but Samantha Mihalovich and Maddie Searcy won 8-4 and Emma Gilham and Latorrie Johnson scored an 8-1 win.
Singles play saw Utley fall 8-3 at number one, but the Bulldogs would win the following four matches to clinch the dual. Dolan was an 8-1 winner at number two, Mihalovich won 8-4 at number three, Searcy won 8-0 at number four and Gilham won 8-0 as well at number five. The final singles match of the dual saw Elle Neal drop a 9-8 decision after falling 7-1 in the tiebreaker.
The win pushed Trenton to 9-2 overall on the season.
Trenton’s junior varsity also picked up a road win against Benton, taking eight of 10 matches played at the second level.
Kendall Crowley and Johnson picked up a 6-1 doubles win and Emily Bonta and Gwyneth Foster won their doubles match 6-0. Bailea Jeannoutot and Amanda Parrack netted a 6-3 doubles win. Singles victories for Trenton at the JV level came from Crowley, who won 6-0; Bonta, who won 6-3; Foster, who won 6-1; Kennedy Wanstreet, who won 6-4; and Jeannoutot, who won 6-3.
Carly Wanstreet was also in JV singles action, falling 8-6. Kennedy Wanstreet and Carly Wanstreet combined for a 6-3 doubles loss.
“I am very proud of how well all the girls played tonight,” Trenton coach Bobbie Hainey said. “But I am especially excited for the JV and their 8-2 victory.”
Trenton’s tennis teams will be back on the court today, traveling to Lexington to take on the Minutewomen in a dual scheduled for 4 o’clock first serves.
