The ditch on the east side of Moberly Park will get a new drainage tube and Eastside Park has a new tree plan following action taken by the Trenton Park Board during a meeting Wednesday at city hall.
The ditch that runs along Bolser Street has long caused drainage issues at Moberly Park and the basketball court located on the east side of the park is now threatened by erosion. To remedy the problem, the board voted to borrow up to $20,000 from the Ebbe Fund to pay for tubing to permanently fix the problem. Only one bid was received for the tubing, submitted by Metal Culverts, Inc. That bid was for 190 feet of 60-inch arched tube at a cost of $85.25 per linear foot. It was noted that the price had increased about $3 per foot in the past week. The tube will require six bands at a cost of $170.50 each for a total cost of $17,220. That amount does not include a catch basin, which will cost another $500, and concrete work. The city will install the tube for the park department.
Board members not only approved the bid, but also borrowing the funds from the Ebbe Fund, which has approximately $90,000 in it at this time. The board agreed that the funds will be paid back over a two-year period, although if there is money left over at the end of this budget year, a payment could be made at that time. A budget amendment was approved, moving the funds into the Moberly Park Account.
In other business, the board voted to reimburse North Central Missouri College for 60 percent of the cost for infield material for Burleigh Grimes Field. Park Superintendent Jason Shuler said NCMC Head Baseball Coach Donnie Hillerman has received a quote for DuraEdge Classic infield material a cost of $92 per ton, which would be $2,300 for the 25 tons needed. Freight will cost $50 per ton or $1,250, for a total cost of $3,550. The park department’s share of the cost would equal $2,130, although that amount might change with Trenton High School possibly contributing up to $400 toward the total cost. Board members approved an expenditure of up to $2,500 for the park department’s share of the cost, with the funds to come from the Burleigh Grimes Field Account.
The board approved a new tree plan for Eastside Park and the walking track area, with board member Gary Schuett presenting the plan developed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. There are trees to be removed and many of the trees that will be placed in the park are ones that are currently in the park department’s nursery. It was noted that a cottonwood tree and a pin oak tree located at the entrance to Eastside Park will be replaced with redbud trees. Schuett said 23 trees will be placed in the park and 25 will be placed around the walking trail.
Shuler told board members that a sign is to be erected to recognize those who donated funds for the disc golf course at Moberly Park, a project that Schuett will spearhead. He also reported on several projects currently under way, including the replacement of a water fountain at the aquatic center filter building in Moberly Park and the installation of a new swing set at that park, which will occur this fall. It was noted that Ben Woodson is working on an Eagle Scout project, which is the installation of metal on the upper Moberly Park shelter house.
The next park board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 4.
