Golfers Nearly Pull Off Quad Win In Marceline

Aug 30, 2017 | Golf, Sports & Recreation

Trenton’s high school girls golf team came as close as they could to pulling off a three team sweep on Tuesday at the Marceline Quad.
As it was, Trenton settled for a second-place finish and a pair of wins.
Brookfield won the event with a team score of 218, a mark Trenton fell in behind by a single stroke after carding a 219. Putnam County (229) and host Marceline (233) rounded out the field.
Trenton was paced by Werthen Gass, who was once again the medalist, carding a quad-low score of 46. She parred three holes on the day and fended off Brookfield’s Laken Sattman, who had a 47, for medalist honors.
Behind Gass, Trenton got a much-improved showing from its other three golfers. Oakley Madden had Trenton’s next-best mark, a 53. Madden birdied a hole and parred another on the way to her career-low nine-hole round. Maci Henson, who had one par on the day, followed with a 54 and Grace Holcomb rounded out the team’s total with a 66.
“We really played well and turned in our lowest team score of the year,” Trenton coach Travis Mullenix said. “I was very proud of the girls. Werthen was medalist again away from home. Oakley shot the best score of her career including her first birdie. Maci played great and is getting some things worked out and Grace is really coming along, too. I can’t say enough about the group as a whole. It’s fun to see them getting better and enjoying themselves out on the course.”
With the 2-1 showing agains the three other teams involved, the Bulldogs moved to 3-3 in head-to-head action on the season.
Trenton’s girls golf team will be back on the links on Tuesday, traveling to the Gallatin Tournament. It is the first tournament of the year for the Bulldogs and scheduled tee time is set for 9 a.m.
