Through two duals, the Trenton High School girls tennis team looks every bit the part of a district championship caliber team. In the Bulldogs’ home-opening dual on Thursday, Trenton throttled visiting Savannah to the tune of a 7-2 beating.
“The girls played a strong first match at home,” Trenton coach Bobbie Hainey said.
Strong indeed.
Trenton routed Savannah in all three doubles matches with Claire Utley and Lauren Dolan taking an 8-4 win at number one and Maddie Searcy and Samantha Mihalovich and Emma Gilham and Latorrie Johnson each winning by 8-2 scores.
In singles play, Trenton dropped just two matches. Utley fell in a tight battle at number one, 9-7 and Johnson was defeated 8-3 at number six. Outside of that it was all Trenton. Dolan was an 8-4 winner at number two and Mihalovich cruised to an 8-1 victory at number three. Searcy didn’t drop a point at number four, crushing her Savannah foe by an 8-0 mark. Gilham won with similar ease, taking her singles match at number five, 8-1.
Trenton couldn’t have scripted a better start to the season, outscoring Carrollton and Savannah by a combined score of 16-2.
The 2-0 Bulldogs will look to keep the momentum rolling next week as Trenton hits the court for three duals and a tournament. The busy week begins with home duals against Chillicothe and LeBlond on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Trenton will travel to Cameron for a dual on Thursday and wrap up the week in St. Joseph at the Benton Tournament on Friday. All three duals begin at 4 p.m. while the tournament is scheduled for first serves at 9 a.m.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Trenton’s junior varsity won its second straight to start the season as well, claiming victories in both JV contests played.
Elle Neal took both singles matches, winning the first by a 6-0 score and the second by a 6-1 mark.
Trenton’s JV tennis squad will also be in action against Chillicothe Monday at the THS tennis courts.
