It wasn’t the start Werthen Gass wanted.
Playing in the first home dual of her junior season on Wednesday, Gass carded a 10 on the opening hole. In the three holes to follow, however, Gass carded three pars in a row, roaring back into medal contention. By the round’s end, Gass had a score of 46 – and the triangular’s medal for the lowest score, beating out her closest competitor by three strokes.
“Werthen really showed some maturity,” Trenton coach Travis Mullenix said. “She had a horrible start to her round but bounced back and had three pars in a row. She was able to put that first hole behind her and focus on what was ahead. She’s two-for-two on medalist honors this year so that’s a good start to her year.”
Trenton played with all four golfers after having just three available in Tuesday’s season opener. Trenton split on the day, carding a team mark of 232. The mark was short of Chillicothe’s 206, but topped Putnam County’s 241, giving the Bulldogs a split.
Behind Gass, Maci Henson and Oakley Madden each carded scores of 61 and Grace Holcomb, playing in her first career golf dual, finished with a 64.
“Maci and Oakley both improved upon their scores from Tuesday,” Mullenix said. “Maci did struggle a little with her ball striking but also had some good shots. Oakley really played well her first few holes but couldn’t keep it going through a full nine. We’ll try to get some things figured out in practice the rest of the week. They both have the ability to take a good number of strokes off their score, they just need to become more consistent and a little better around the greens.
“I was very proud of Grace’s score. It was her first-ever match and having just picked up golf 23 days ago, she really did well. She’s having fun and getting better each day so I’m excited to see how much she can improve over the course of the year.”
Trenton, now 1-2 overall on the season, will be back on the links on Monday, traveling to Mozingo Lake Golf Course for the Maryville Best Ball Tournament at 9 a.m.
