The Grundy R-5 Board of Education approved its tax rate for the 2017-18 school year during a meeting on Thursday night.
According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board approved the tax rate of $5.9207 on the $100 assessed valuation. This is the same rate as the past several years.
Approval was given to the bus routes, the Annual Secretary of the Board Report, the elementary school student handbook and the eligibility criteria for free and reduced lunches. Boston John’s Heating and Cooking of Kirksville will be making repairs to the walk-in freezer at the elementary school. The board also agreed to advertise for the removal of two old houses.
An update was given on repairs to the high school gym floor, which will begin on Monday. The board reviewed MAP scores for elementary students and heard an update on the fencing around the elementary playground. A list of upcoming activities and events was also presented.
Following a closed session, the board agreed to waive a board policy for advertising for a position and hired Randy Huffman as the part-time principal for the seventh through 12th grade. The board also voted to hire Bobbie Novak as a part-time music teacher for the 2017-8 school year.
The first day of classes in the district for the 2017-18 school year will be on Thursday, Aug. 17.
The next regular board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the elementary school in Humphreys.
