
Shows featuring poultry, rabbits and dairy cattle were the highlights of the North Central Missouri Fair on Thursday.
Dairy Cattle
There were 10 head of dairy cattle, including two bucket calves, entered in Thursday’s show, with Derrek Hardy of Browning exhibiting the Supreme Champion Dairy Female, a Holstein. The reserve champion, a Brown Swiss, was exhibited by Hillary Shahan of Unionville. Hardy and Ms. Shahan were also named the showmanship winners, with Hardy taking first in the senior division and Ms. Shahan taking first in the junior division.
Ms. Shahan exhibited the following breed champions: Ayreshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Jersey and Red Holstein, while Hardy’s Holstein was the champion Holstein.
Ms. Shahan earned five blue ribbons on the day, while Hardy earned two blue ribbons and Casey Turley of Spickard earned 1 blue ribbon. Easton and Avery Hamilton of Unionville participated in the bucket calf division.
Flower Show
A total of 20 adults and 10 youth registered 150 entries into the flower show at the Rock Barn.
Dorothy Taul and Troy Crawford, co-chairmen, of the show reported the community members displayed beautiful houseplants, roses, annuals, perennials, bulbs and tubers, shrubs and vines, herbs and grasses. Design entries included mini plants, dried materials, water expansion, arrangements and other varieties.
Carolyn Forman won the Grand River Club Award, with Best of Show going to Taylor Jasinski and the award for Most Unusual Arrange-ment being awarded to Jena Hunter with her “Boot Stop” succulents. She also received the Junior Award for entering the most junior items. The Outstanding Award was given to Barb Peterson for her “Along the Road” flower arrangement.
Barb Peterson and Nancy Bland tied for first with each earning 11 blue ribbons. Jena Hunter earned nine blue ribbons, while Betty Rumbley earned six and Mrs. Forman earned five.
There were 39 head of sheep entered in this morning’s sheep show, with 20 goats entered for that show, also held today.
Rock Barn Awards
Awards from the Rock Barn area have been announced. The Rock Barn exhibits cover a wide range of interest with displays being shared by area youth, adults and convalescent home and the Grundy County Learning Center. The overall numbers in several areas were slightly lower than last year but the Rock Barn superintendents reported that the overall quality of items remained consistently above average.
There were 80 youth who displayed their skills in a number of areas. Included in the group were eight youth participating in the special woodworking category, with prizes sponsored by Moore’s Construction and Woodworking. Ball-Kerr Awards were also given in recognition of youth involved in food preservation (canning). The Loretta Ray Award for most canned items entered by a youth will be presented to Elliana Gaunt.

Loretta Ray was the recipient of the Bessie Chamber Award for most items entered in the adult division in a food-related area. Ms. Ray entered an assortment of 70 items primarily in the food preservation section. Outstanding Recognition went to Twyla Johnson and Kris Smith.
In the Adult Ball-Kerr vegetable competition, Rachel Snider received a first for her canned okra with Twyla Johnson receiving a second for a green bean entry. In fruits, awards went to Loretta Ray for canned peaches. She also took second place with a pear entry. Ms. Ray also took first and second place in the Pickles section with dill pickle and bread and butter pickle entries. In the soft spread category, Kim Ray took first with a cherry jelly entry and Loretta Ray took second with an apricot jam entry.
