Andrea Merrin presented the program during Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club.
Mrs. Merrin was one of seven individuals from the Hodge Presbyterian Church that recently spent time in Haiti, providing medical care and working with youth. Mrs. Merrin, Sarah Jordan and Andrew Maxey told about their experiences, which included visits to several hospitals, orphanages and schools. Also taking part in the mission trip were Hollie Hild, Jenna Wynne, Charlie Hoffman and Elijah Merrin.
Mrs. Merrin said that thanks to donations from various organizations and individuals, the group was able to take enough medicine for three clinics as well as donating some to the organization that works with the Haitian people medically on a full-time basis. She noted that the group was able to purchase “worming pills” at a much cheaper rate once they got to Haiti as opposed to purchasing them in the U.S., thus making more of that type of medicine available. The group also took items for the youth with which they worked, including soccer balls, jump ropes, etc.
They spent most of their time at the Flower of Hope School, where they held a clinic for both the young and old. She said that the clinics, when held, focus on the elderly and very young because of their inability to get to health care services under normal circumstances.
In addition to the medical clinics, the group played games with the children. The group was housed in an orphanage and slept in beds that were covered with netting to keep out mosquitos.
During the business meeting, it was announced that the club has been asked to take tickets at the North Central Missouri Fair demolition derby on Aug. 5.
Next week’s program will be the installation of officers and board members for the new year.
