Sarah Maloney, administrator of the North 65 Center, gave the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Virgil Walden was the program chairman.
Ms. Maloney gave the club a glimpse of a “day in the life” at the North 65 Center, which begins at 6 o’clock in the morning when the cooks arrive and begin preparing for lunch that day. She said 70-plus individuals have their meals at the center each day with another 50 to 70 individuals receiving delivered meals (8 to 12 individuals on each of six delivery routes). Meals are required to have at least 2 to 3 ounces of protein along with two servings of vegetables, a serving a fruit, two servings of grain product and a milk product. She noted that salads are also available.
At around 7 a.m., several individuals will come to the center to participate in the day’s activities, which include card playing, jigsaw puzzles, pool and a lot of visiting. There are also exercises classes available and all continue throughout most of the day.
Special activities include a “fun night” each Tuesday in which persons can take part in singing, dancing, card playing, pool, etc. Those attending also bring snacks to share along with food that is available for a nominal fee.
Bingo is played on Thursday night, which Ms.  Maloney said is the center’s largest fundraiser. There is an early bird and regular session and the amount of money that can be won depends on the number of persons playing. Volunteers assist with Bingo, including getting the room ready, calling numbers and operating the concession area.
She said that there are nine members of the board that oversee center operations.
During the business meeting, the club awarded nine Paul Harris Fellows to members in recognition of their work with and support of Rotary International. They included Brian Upton, Debbie Carman, Dr. Kevin Harris, Jackie Soptic, Mary Easter, Roger Bennett, Savannah Summers, Teresa Cross and Phil Hoffman, who received an “eight-plus” designation. The club also made a $6,000 donation to the Trenton Park Department to assist with development of an inclusive-use park area and purchase of equipment. Money was raised through local activities as well as a district Rotary grant the Trenton club received.
Next week’s program chairman is Kristi Urich.
