A celebration of life service for Donald Anthony Opitz will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 1005 S. Grant in Gallatin.
Mr. Opitz, a 78-year-old Jamesport resident, died at 4:46 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Cameron Regional Hospital in Cameron. The body is to be cremated under the direction of Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home of Trenton.
Mr. Opitz was born on March 27, 1939 in Chicago, IL, the loving son of the late Louis and Beatrice Rogers Misskelly Opitz. He was employed at Jewel Food Stores in Chicago, IL. He also owned and operated the Cedarwood Restaurant with his son, Don.
As a young boy, Mr. Opitz spent his summers on his grandfather’s farm south of Jamesport, where he developed a love for rural Missouri life. Big Don, also lovingly know as King Kong to his family and friends, loved living on his farm in Hickory, where he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Don was a unique man who enjoyed the outdoors and was an adamant collector of his hero John Wayne and was a friend to all.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Michet and her husband, Robert and Nancy Opitz; two sons, Donald Von Opitz and his wife, Nancy of Gallatin and Michael Opitz and his wife, Cindy; a daughter-in-law, Jamie Opitz; a brother, Louis Opitz and his wife, Carol; a sister, Belinda Misskelly; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Abbie, Grace, Eric and his wife, Cindy, Michael, Adam, Dakota, Carter and Sarah; a great-granddaughter, Lilly; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven; and an infant son, Eric.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Hillcrest Manor in Hamilton.
