Justin Holt, an 86-year-old resident of Gallatin, died on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today (May 30, 2017) at the United Methodist Church in Gallatin. Burial was in the Haseville Cemetery near Laredo.
Mr. Holt was born on Sept. 9, 1930 in Dunlap, the son of Ora and Dessie McNutt Holt. He attended East Fairview School, north of Galt, and graduated from Galt High School in 1949. He received an associate’s degree at Trenton Junior College and later went on to the University of Missouri, where he received his bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He was inducted in the US Army in 1952, serving his country until 1960.
He was married on Sept. 5, 1954 in Kansas City to Jewell Dennis. The couple made their home on a farm near Galt. He began his working career at the Missouri Extension Office in Chillicothe, later being transferred to Fulton and Gallatin. He was employed for the extension office for several years before taking employment for the Wood Brothers in Gallatin. He later became an insurance agent for the Larry D. Barnes Insurance Company in Trenton.
Mr. Holt was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gallatin where he sang in the choir. He was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and made many birdhouses. He enjoyed reading and keeping up on current events. When he went to the veterans home, he enjoyed playing bingo and poker and gave his winnings to someone else who needed it. He lived his life with the spirit of setting the example of being fair to people, treating them as he wished to be treated. He was a kind and gentle man who loved spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Holt is survived by his wife, Jewell of the home; a son, Eric (Lisa) Holt of St. Peters; a sister, Erma Hamilton of Gilman City; a grandson, Travis Holt of Phoenix, AZ; a granddaughter, Kristen Very and her husband Jon of St. Peters; and great-granddaughter, Mikaela Very.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Calvin and Kermit Holt; and his sister, Marvis Davis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gallatin United Methodist Church or Crossroads Hospice in care of McWilliams Funeral Home at Gallatin, which was in charge of arrangements.
