Rotary Club Hears About Girl Scout Program

May 19, 2017 | Headline News

Shana Norris, membership director of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri, presented the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club.
Mrs. Norris said there are 23,310 Girl Scouts in the Northeast Kansas/Northwest Missouri area, which serves 47 counties. Trenton is located in the northern region, with Grundy County having 76 girls in 11 troops. She described the Girl Scouts as a leadership program for girls age kindergarten through 12th grade and said the mission of Girl Scouts is to build courage, confidence and character to help make the world a better place. She said the acronym GIRL stands for go-getter, innovator, risk-taker and leader, which she said the organizations strives for members to be. She said there have been many changes in the scouting program over the years, but many of the traditions remain the same. As part of the program, girls are encouraged to take part in community service projects and she listed several in which the local troops have been involved. Girl Scouts face many challenges she said, the most difficult being retaining volunteers and troop leaders as well as older scouts. She said finances have also presented a challenge in the program’s efforts to provide all girls the “full Girl Scout experience.”
During the business meeting it was announced that a special celebration for the club is being planned for early June, with more information to be presented at a later date. Member Ralph Boots officially announced he will be leaving Trenton to take a new position in Liberty and thanked the local club for getting him involved with Rotary, adding he plans to transfer his membership to the Liberty club.
